Youth Summer Program Staff (Part-time seasonal)

We are excited to announce this new summer position for youth aged 15-30, thanks to a grant from Employment and Social Development Canada! This is fun, rewarding work organizing and working on gardens and projects that are all about food security on the Sunshine Coast. Skills gained will be unique and important in this changing time, where the world is focusing more on local food production. The successful applicant will learn from knowledgeable mentors about the food business and food distribution, growing a market garden, permaculture methods to increase local food production, marketing/promotions/social media, and help to coordinate roles, tasks, and volunteers to meet project and production deadlines.

You will work to help oversee programs including:

  • Tiny Farm Community Garden in Roberts Creek (hands-on food production work including soil amendments, garden bed creation, growing, weeding, harvesting, packing food bins, transporting food bins for home delivery)
  • Ocean Vegetables Community Garden in Sechelt (planting and maintenance of   garden, assisting in work session planning, working with volunteers, designing signs)
  • Educational Programs (help with overall ideas, curriculum, organization and promotion of workshops and learning events)
  • Admin Support (help with social media, Mailchimp, other online and print media, surveys, record-keeping, and other duties as required)

Qualifications:

  • Open to applicants aged 15-30 (condition of the grant)
  • Reliable transportation required to various worksites Gibsons, Roberts Creek, and Sechelt
  • No specific qualifications are required, other than a genuine interest!

1 position: Programs Coordinator

35 hrs/wk – $18/hr

Admin & Coordination: Work with Programs Manager and Board of Directors to oversee and coordinate the resources, signs and programs for two community gardens; update and develop local Green Banner Directory of food resources. Assist in creating Planting Plans with volunteer support, seek donations and resources to plant and maintain the garden; support, schedule, plan and work with volunteers; work with community partners with a focus on vulnerable populations; Create marketing materials and use social media; Keep in contact with the District of Sechelt Parks Department; Work with manager to develop curriculum and annual calendar for workshops and programs that will run throughout the year; consider and plan for adaptations that may be required for social distancing.

Depending on applicant, there will also be opportunities for up to 10 hrs/wk in technology creativity – helping develop IT plans for coordination of garden projects, systems for budgeting and sales of a market garden produce, social media, online purchasing systems; design web pages and resources for fundraising campaigns; upgrade membership and payment system, and update membership information.

Community Gardens Team Staff

30 hrs/wk – $17/hr

Garden Staff: Work with team to create garden plans, source supplies and tools needed, help coordinate a permaculture educational program in collaboration with the Permaculture Design Certification Program; upgrade a greenhouse, support contractors to install irrigation systems, water collection systems, and greenhouse systems; Plant, maintain and harvest food crops in two community gardens (One in Sechelt, one in Roberts Creek); Work with Market Garden Manager to plan for and maintain crops for weekly food bins for local families in need (collaboration with 5 local farms);

Depending on applicant, there will also be opportunities for up to 10 hrs/wk in technology creativity – helping develop IT plans for coordination of garden projects, systems for budgeting and sales of a market garden produce, social media, online purchasing systems; design web pages and resources for fundraising campaigns; upgrade membership and payment system, and update membership information.
