Fruit Tree Project

Fruit Tree Project is on hold this year and is  seeking stewardship.

If you are seeking pickers for your fruit trees this year, we apologize that we are not able to help you out and encourage you to check back frequently as we will share any up to date information on the project here.

Fruit is an incredibly abundant organic food resource on the Sunshine Coast – so much so that there aren’t nearly enough hands to pick and distribute what grows. As a result, hundreds of pounds of fruit go to waste annually.

The Fruit Tree Project’s mission is to help reduce this waste by organizing volunteer pickers to harvest and distribute the excess fruit in our community.

Pesticide-free, organically-grown fruit is harvested between the months of July and October from Gibsons to Pender Harbour.

Historically, picked fruit has been split between the home owners, pickers, charities and the host organization, sharing yields in a diverse and fruitful way!

By bringing people together to harvest fruit, food waste is reduced while improving food security in our community and mitigating wildlife attractants. This is also an avenue to exchange knowledge and information on fruit tree care, harvesting, and fruit preserving.

One Straw Society no longer has the capacity to steward this great community project.  If you, or an organization you know of is interested in taking the project on, please contact Kym : executivedirector@onestraw.ca for all of the details.

We hope that another organization will be able to take this program on and that next year, it will be back in action for you.  Thank you for all of your support.
