National Observer Article: Casandra Fletcher 2025-June
We are proud and excited to share that our Executive Director, Casandra Fletcher, has been featured in an article with the National Observer, and we would like to share that with you!
Spearheaded by Vancouver-based organization – SPEC BC – Casandra was approached and asked if she could be interviewed and featured in a series of articles focusing on elders in Canada doing work building community and impacted by climate change.
After being both honoured and humorously offended for being considered an “elder” at barely 50, she agreed, only after being convinced that it was an opportunity to shine a light on the good work of One Straw Society that she has worked so hard to build. To our board, the UBC team doing the interviews, SPEC coordinating it, and the National Observer in publishing it, being an “elder” is not about age, but about leadership, lived experience, and service.
While usually trying to avoid the spotlight and the microphone, preferring to build and lead in the background, Casandra does occasionally take the stage.
We hope you enjoy.
