Our Culture and Values: How We Work Together

 In Uncategorized

It’s hard sometimes to pinpoint what “organizational culture” is – and this page is an attempt to name it. We believe that how we work together matters just as much as what we accomplish.

These values are a big part of our success with innovative new initiatives, and why our staff, volunteers, members, partners, funders, and community continue to choose to work with us. We know that our reputation is built through thousands of thoughtful decisions, consistent actions, and everyday professionalism – and these start with kindness, trust, and collaboration.

These are our promises to you, and expectations of you, as our team and partners.

1. We support one another.

None of us accomplishes meaningful work alone. We celebrate one another’s successes, lend a hand when it’s needed, and treat one another with dignity, patience, and compassion. We recognize good work publicly and address concerns privately.

2. We work with responsibility and integrity.

We strive to be honest, accountable, and trustworthy in everything we do. We follow through on commitments, use the organization’s time wisely and efficiently, and we care for the relationships, resources, and reputation entrusted to us. We know that every hour and dollar we spend has been made possible through someone else’s generosity and trust.

3. We speak to people, not about people.

We assume good intentions, giving people the benefit of the doubt, knowing that we are all learning. When there’s a bump, we have respectful, honest conversations with the person involved, avoiding judgment, gossip or speculation. Questions, disagreements, and different ideas can all lead to stronger relationships (and better outcomes) when approached in good faith.

4. We are part of the solution.

Challenges are part of every worthwhile endeavour, and can be even harder with limited resources in a non-profit. When the work is tough, we bring curiosity, flexibility, creativity, and optimism, rather than complaints, blame or negativity. We don’t simply point out what’s not working – we help improve it, because we know that we’re all building this together.

5. We remember why we’re here.

Our purpose is bigger than any one project or person. Together, we are building a healthier, more resilient, and more just food system for our community. One small job is an important part of a much bigger plan! Keeping that shared purpose at the centre helps guide our decisions, our priorities, and our relationships.

These aren’t just values we expect of others—they’re commitments we continually ask of ourselves. We’ll sometimes fall short, but when we do, we acknowledge it, learn from it, and keep striving to do better.

One last value to remember while we’re working: Meaningful work can also be joyful work!

Even though food insecurity is a heavy subject, every day, we have the privilege of creating, playing, helping and learning in places and programs that bring GOOD to the world around us. It’s amazing, inspiring, challenging, and can also be a lot of fun. Bring brightness! Be silly! Throw a maybe-ridiculous idea on the table! It’s how innovation and engagement thrive.

Thank you for being a part of this good.
